UPDATE FROM DEFRA ON THE AGRICULTURE BILL

Today, Tuesday 7th July, the Agriculture Bill starts its first day of Committee stage in the House of Lords, taking another step towards reaching Royal Assent later this year as planned.

Defra Minister Lord Gardiner will be leading several sittings of the whole House, expected to take place over the next two weeks. During this stage of the Bill’s passage, peers will have the opportunity to scrutinise this landmark piece of legislation line by line, as well as consider any amendments tabled by the House.

You can watch the debates through Parliament TV.

Trade and Agriculture Commission

We have been clear throughout the passage of the Bill that all EU food safety, animal welfare and environmental standards will be retained at the end of the transition period and will therefore form part of our domestic law. Last week, the Government also announced that it will establish a Trade and Agriculture Commission, which will ensure that the UK’s trade policy fully considers our farmers and our commitment to maintain the UK’s high environmental protection, animal welfare and food safety standards.
